Mercedes A/C system takes a long time to cool interior in the afternoon

If your Mercedes’ A/C system works well in the morning but struggles to cool down the interior in the afternoon after it’s been sitting in the hot sun, or if you have the driver’s side warmer that the passenger side, you may have to have your freon levels topped off or recharged. In the relative cooler morning air, the system may deliver enough cold air out of the vents to satisfy your needs, however, with the added heat accumulated by sitting in the hot sun all afternoon, or simply the higher afternoon temperatures, the air conditioning system in your Mercedes will have to be running in its optimum, otherwise it will deliver warm air through the vents.

Properly Charging a Mercedes A/C System

Another symptom of low freon levels in your Mercedes A/C system is cooler air from the right side (passenger) vents and warmer air from the driver’s. This is due to low freon level in your A/C system. The level of freon is enough to cool the passenger side because there is not enough freon gas to do the job properly, it loses its efficiency by the time it gets to the driver’s side. This is remedied by simply evacuating the entire system and refilling it with the proper amount of freon, using a specialized charging system.

#1 Reason to Do Complete Repairs

Complete repairs vs. partial repairs.

For some repairs there are options available, not like a battery where there is one piece to replace.  For instance a thermostat on an E90 3-series BMW.  With a faulty thermostat we recommend replacing the electronic water pump as well due to the rate of failure.  More specifically, when replacing the thermostat we need to drain the coolant.  When the coolant is drained from the water pump, the pump can not re-fill properly and this will cause failure.  Although this does not happen every time, we recommend replacing the water pump while the thermostat is being replaced.  If it is not then there is additional labor cost involved replacing the pump, whereas some of the labor is reduced when replacing both parts together.

Cracked Engine Drive Belts

The cracks seen here on the inside of the serpentine belt can spell Trouble!

The cracks seen here on the inside of the serpentine belt can spell Trouble!

A cracked engine drive belt can lead to your car being stranded while driving and possibly damage the engine itself or its components.  The engine drive belt is what keeps your air conditioning compressor turning to keep you cool, keeps the power steering pump turning and also keeps the alternator charging the battery to keep up with the electrical demands while driving.  A belt coming apart can not only damage these components from impact, but can also lead to overheating.  One of the factors of drive belt wear and cracking is intense heat and age.  A way to help monitor your drive belt’s condition is routine inspections of your complete vehicle at every oil service.

#1 Reason to Check Your Tire Tread

This is a good time of year to check the tread and condition of your tires.  With the “rainy” season approaching driving on severely worn or bald tires can be very dangerous.  Storms like the one we had yesterday are always a reminder to me to check the tires on all of our vehicles.  Fresh tires make driving in the rain much safer and can drastically reduce the likelihood of hydroplaning.

Deeper treads on the tire help displace water away from the contact patch on the tire.  The contact patch is the area of the tire that is in direct contact with the road.  By displacing the water the tire is less likely to hydroplane, or ride on top of the water, thus causing a loss of control.
